Flat Edge !
Flat Edge usually appears at the switch rail, due to the series impact and compression of train vehicles on the stock rail and switch rail, their edges become flattened.
Causes:
Flat edge is mainly caused by the crushing of the outer rail of the curve and the inner rail of stock tail top, which is caused by heavy vehicle operation and irregular movement of the wheelset.
Hazards:
Flat edge of the steel rail can damage the wheel rail relationship, leading to serpentine motion of the wheelset and increasing the running resistance of the wheelset. It usually occurs at the switch rail of a turnout, and sometimes it also occurs at the center of the frog.
Flat edge of the stock rail and the switch rail of the turnout affects the close fitting adjustment.
